Why Early Spring Is an Ideal Time to Build a New Deck

Why do deck builders say early spring is the best time to plan and build a new deck? Here are the reasons why:

It’s Easier to Schedule an Appointment With a Designer

For one thing, it’s easier to get an appointment with a deck designer in early spring. Demand for contractor services dips in winter and doesn’t rebound until the middle of spring. You might even be able to get a great deal on some deck materials thanks to lower demand.

The Mild Weather Conditions During Spring

By scheduling deck construction in early spring, you’ll ensure the quality of the deck’s construction. Contractors will be able to work faster and more efficiently in ideal weather conditions after all.

Why Not Wait Until Mid-or-Late Spring?

Why does it have to be late winter or early spring? Wouldn’t it be better to wait until the mid-or-late spring, when temperatures are more ideal? Well, most deck builders recommend starting deck construction in late winter or early spring because:

There’s a Lower Risk of Wood Movement

The pressure-treated lumber used to build decks needs time, usually a few months, to dry. If the moisture levels are too high, which is often the case in late spring, the lumber might absorb too much moisture and swell. Not to mention it’ll take longer for wood to dry. Since late winter and early spring isn’t too humid yet, the lumber will dry faster and more evenly.

It’s Easier to Stain Wooden Decks in a Low-Humidity Environment

Too much moisture in the air will make it harder for pressure-treated wood to absorb staining treatment. Increased humidity might even cause cracks to form in your new deck.

You Won’t Be Able to Fully Enjoy Your New Deck if You Start Construction in Late Spring

No matter how you look at, it makes more practical sense to build a deck in late winter or early spring. If you don’t start building your deck now, you won’t be able to enjoy it during the season with the most pleasant weather.

One more thing: Don’t forget to vet your deck builders before hiring them. Here’s a vetting tip: The number of years they’ve been working in the industry gives you a good idea of their level of expertise.
